Changes to Main Event Re-Entry

Since the plan is to play until 13 players remain in Flight A, the tournament organizers have offered players a chance to re-enter on Day 2 of the event as well as in Flight B.  Only one re-entry is allowed, so players cannot play both flights plus Day 2.  However, players that have not yet played Flight A can play Flight B, bust, and re-enter on Day 2 now.

Currently 14 players remain in Flight A, so play conclude when one more player busts.

Event #2 Final Results

2012/2013 WSOP Circuit South Africa
Event #2: $580 No-Limit Hold'em Six Handed (Wedneday, February 6, 2013)
76 entries / $38,000 prize pool

The first all in at the final table came by Jonathan “Safehands” Kalil , holding K♣8against the A♠7♠ of Ahmed Karrim.  The TK♠2flop paired Jonathan, and another king on the turn guaranteed him a doubleup.  Jonathan doubled up a second time when his QJ spiked a jack on the turn against the AQ♣ of Greg Tucker after getting it all in on a K9♠6♠.

The double ups continued when Kamlan Naidoo coolered Greg, Kamlan holding KK♠ against Greg’s A♣K♣.  Greg failed to find an ace on the 2♠9Q♠44♠ runout, and Kamlan got the doubleup much to the excitement of his supporters in the room.  Jonathan then earned his third double up of the day when his A♠7 held against Menesh Keshau’s Q♠J.  Menesh flopped a queen, but Jonathan flopped an ace, and that was all he needed to survive.

Menesh quickly got his last eight big blinds in and was called by Matt Beckett.  Menesh was racing with his 6♠6♣ against Matt’s AQ, and it looked like we’d have our fifth doubleup as the board read J599♣ on the turn.  But the A hit the river to send Menesh to the payout desk in 7th place, good for $1,757.  Menesh is a financial advisor from Pretoria, and he hopes to one day play the WSOP Main Event.

The next player to hit the rail was Jonathan.  His luck finally ran out when he was unable to overcome Kamlan’s AK♣ with A♠Q.  Jonathan did his best to spike a queen, but came up short when the board fell
34♣7♣8♠K.  Jonathan is married to his wife Natasha and has an eight month old child, so his family will put the $2,135 he earned for his 6th place finish to good use.

Matt had a one-two punch to spell out his 5th place elimination.  First he doubled up Greg when his Ah8d failed to crack Greg’s JsJd.  Matt turned a gutshot and an overcard when the board read 6s6d5s9c, but the 3h on the river failed to improve his hand.  He went out a few hands later when his opponent made a pair of nines.  Matt operates poker tournaments and previously cashed in a similar six max tournament at WPT Africa.  This time he’ll collect $2,730 for his efforts.

Daniel Lamberti is one final table participant who hadn’t made much noise so far, at least on the felt.  He had been tweeting under the name @Daniel_Lamberti throughout the event, and has many tournament cashes on his poker resume.  This would be his 6th cash at the Emerald Resort & Casino.  Unfortunately for Daniel, his hopes of a win were dashed when his A5 ran into Greg’s A♠J.  The board ran out pure, and Daniel was sent to the rail in 4th place for $3,684.

Greg claimed another elimination, though this time it wasn’t as easy.  Kamlan was all in preflop holding 95 against Greg’s KK♠.  While Greg made top set on the K7Q flop, Kamlan picked up a flush draw.  The T♠ on the turn gave Kamlan more outs for a gutshot straight, but the T♣ on the river gave Greg the winning full house.  Kamlan was born in Durban and now lives in Midrand, and he is a high stakes cash game player who one day hopes to play the big games in Las Vegas.  The $5,262 he earned today for his 3rd place finish might convince Kamlan that tournaments are OK, too.

When heads up play began, Greg had a 581k to 331k lead over Ahmed.  Ahmed battled his way back to take over the lead, and he had the tournament all but won when he got all in on a Q3♠69♣ board.  Ahmed had made two pair with 9♠6♠ against Greg’s A♣9and needed to dodge the three remaining aces.  But this tournament was not to be over, yet, as the Alanded on the river to give Greg the chip lead back.

Greg entered the final table as the chip leader, and after regaining the chip lead heads up, he never looked back.  The final hand had Greg holding A♣7♠ against Ahmed’s KJ.  Though he had a slight sweat on the turn when the board read 4♣6AK♠, a harmless 5♣ hit the river to knock Ahmed out in 2nd place for $7,994.

Greg is no stranger to WSOP Circuit Africa final tables, as he got 4th place in a $350 event last year, as well as a 16th place finish in the WSOP Circuit Africa Main Event in 2010.  He also recently won the Montecasino Poker Challenge High Roller event in November for over $40,000.  Greg lists Vanessa Selbst and Faraz Jaka as his two favorite poker players, and hopes to emulate that success by one day winning the Triple Crown.  On Twitter, Greg can be followed under the name @GregTucker_.

Event #1 Final Results

2012/2013 WSOP Circuit South Africa
Event #1: $365 No-Limit Hold’em (Tuesday, February 5, 2013)
278 entries (115 for Flight A, 163 for Flight B) / $83,400 prize pool

It didn’t take long for action to get started at the first final table of the 2012/2013 WSOP Circuit South Africa.  On the very first hand, Eric Brand from Cape Town, South Africa was all in with KK♣ against his opponent’s J♠J on a 436 flop.  Eric was in great shape to double up as he only needed to dodge one of the two remaining jacks.  The 6♠ on the turn changed nothing, but the J on the river dashed Eric’s hopes at winning a WSOP ring in this event.  For his 10th place finish, Eric earns $1,487, which will help fund his future chinese poker games.

Jay Sookoo from Durban, South Africa was the next player to get all in, this time holding 33♣ vs. Jarred Solomon’s A♣Q.  Jay was in a race for a tournament life, but he didn’t have to sweat it for too long as he made quads when the flop fell 353♠.  The board ran out KQ♣ to give Jay the doubleup.

Jarred lost a few more chips when his Q♠Q ran into attorney David Dadic’s KK♣ on a 72T flop.  Jarred couldn’t find a queen when the turn and river fell 66♦, and David doubled up to be back in the hunt.

Jason Dominguez had stayed quiet so far, mostly due to his short stack entering this final table.  He finally committed the last of his chips holding pocket fours and was called by his opponent in the big blind holding 6-7.  Jason’s small pair was outrun, and he was eliminated in 9th place, good for $1,836.

Jay Sookoo got his chips working again when he moved all in with pocket jacks, but unfortunately ran into Jarred’s pocket kings.  The board ran out 9♠Q86♠7 to give Jarred the knockout.  Jay earned $2,302 for his 8th place finish.

Tyronne Sacks also tried to crack kings when his AT ran into the second best starting hand.  Kings continued to hold up as this time the board fell 6♠858♠T♠, and he exited the tournament in 7th place for $2,929.  Tyronne is a former actor/model who now runs a poker shop in Johannesburg, South Africa who lists “bubbling” as his superstition.

Nawal Jaftha, the only female at the final table, got unlucky when her A♠K was 3-outed by Dr. Eben Lottering’s K♣5, all in preflop.  Eben spiked a 5 on the flop and took a good chunk of Nawal’s stack.  But Eben didn’t hold on to those chips for very long as Nawal doubled through him with pocket treys against Eben’s A-Q.

Michael Holden from Johannesburg, South Africa looked to be in good position to double up as he took his J♠J♣ up against Jarred’s inferior A♣8.  However, luck was on Jarred’s side as he spiked an ace on the 2A3 flop.  The 6♣ turn and 2 river failed to materialize the jack Michael was looking for, and he would have to settle for the $3,785 payday for 6th place.  Micheal owns a horse racing website and claims his wife Maxine is a better poker player than he is.

Eben lost the bulk of his chips with A5 when he ran into the A♣6♣ of David Dadic, all in on a A♠48 flop.  The T♣ turn and 3 river ensured David’s 6 kicker played, crippling Eben.  He got the remainder of his chips in with the best of it, holding K2♠ against Jarred’s J♣T♣.  Jarred turned trips to send Eben to the payout desk, cashing in his 5th place ticket for $4,966.  Eben’s poker ambition is to play in the WSOP Main Event, and with his cash today, he is halfway to his dream.

Nawal found herself all in again, this time on a 5♣2J flop.  Nawal had a gutshot and an overcard with A4, up against 23 year old poker pro Levi Dare’s K♠K♣.  In continuing the earlier trend, pocket kings held for a third time at this final table when the turn and river fell JT♣.  Nawal started the day in 37th place out of 43 players, so surely she was pleased with the $6,622 she earned for her 4th place finish.  Nawal is married with 4 kids and resides in Cape Town, South Africa.

On the first hand back after break, David moved all in with AT and was snap called by Jarred, who held Q♣Q.  Pocket queens held up through a 8♣7K8♠3♠, and David was eliminated in 3rd place for $8,976.  David hopes to one day own a WSOP bracelet.

Jarred entered heads up with a 4 to 1 chip advantage, and it didn’t take him long to get Levi all in.  Levi had turned two pair on the 39T♠Q with his Q♣3♣, but was in terrible shape as Jarred held KJ♠ for a king high straight.  Levi would need to hit one of the two remaining queens or treys to survive, but he just missed as the river fell 4♠.  Levi entered the final table as the chip leader, but will have to settle for 2nd place in this tournament, good for $12,370.

A former personal trainer, Jarred is now a professional poker player.  While he won this no limit hold’em tournament, Jarred prefers Omaha tournaments.  In an interview with Tournament Director Jack Effel after his win, 26 year old Jarred admitted that he faced tough opponents throughout the tournament, both young and old.  Good cards and well-timed aggression were key aspects that earned Jarred the win.  Discussing the 3rd annual WSOP Circuit Africa, Jarred explained that “The World Series of Poker is amazing.”  His love of the tour will definitely be expanded now that he has a WSOP Circuit Ring and an additional $20,018 in his pocket.
